What hospitals actually get paid.

Since 2021 every US hospital has had to publish the price it has negotiated with every insurer, for every service. Almost nobody reads those files: they are enormous, inconsistent, and buried. This project parses them state by state, benchmarks every price against what Medicare pays the same hospital for the same care, and puts the result in one place you can search, filter, and link to.

How a state gets built

  1. Census. Every acute-care and critical-access hospital in the state, from the CMS Provider Data Catalog — so coverage is measured against a known denominator, not against whatever was easy to find.
  2. Discovery. Each hospital’s machine-readable file is located through the cms-hpt.txt endpoint the rule requires at the domain root. A file we cannot verify belongs to that hospital is not used.
  3. Parse. Every file is read against the same 107-procedure basket — the same CPT, HCPCS and MS-DRG codes in every state — so a price in one state means the same thing as a price in another.
  4. Benchmark. Each price is set beside what Medicare pays that hospital for that code, wage- and case-mix-adjusted, plus an estimate of cost to deliver from the hospital’s own federal cost report.
  5. Publish. Everything ships as static pages with the data inlined, so any view is a link you can paste, and nothing about you is sent anywhere.
